Standard Chartered appoints Bob Fabrizi as head of production support services for private banking, wealth management and retail

5 min read

Standard Chartered has taken on a veteran technologist from DBS, its third big tech hire from the Singaporean bank in recent months.

Bob Fabrizi has joined Stan Chart as its Singapore-based head of production support services for private banking, wealth management and retail. He previously spent almost two years as DBS’s head of platform support for consumer banking group technology, managing a team of more than 260 people, according to his online profile.

Fabrizi’s move to Stan Chart follows that of Paul Beresford, another major player from the same DBS department. As we reported at the time, Beresford, head of consumer banking group digital technology at DBS, joined Stan Chart in November as global head of retail products technology channels, statements and operations.

In June, the UK firm also hired George Harrak, head of technology delivery for DBS’s digital bank, as global head of technology programmes and solutions for private banking and wealth.

Stan Chart has been investing heavily in digital banking and technology in Singapore over the past two years, including hiring about 300 technologists in 2016 alone as part of a $300m global tech upgrade. Last year’s senior hires also included Pedro Sousa Cardoso, global head of digital commerce.

Singapore’s largest five banking employers – Citi, DBS, OCBC, Stan Chart and UOB – are all stepping up their tech recruitment, which often means poaching from each other as the local talent market is comparatively small. Despite the departures of Fabrizi, Beresford and Harrak, DBS plans to hire 200 new technologists, mainly developers and architects, in the year to end-May 2018.

Fabrizi began his career in the US back in 1982 and held various developer and consultant roles over the next two decades, including building software for the 1987 Linus Write-Top computer, one of the world’s first handwriting-recognition tablets.

He relocated to Tokyo in 2001 and to Singapore in 2005 during an eight-year stint with German firm Software AG. Fabrizi moved to the finance sector in 2008 and worked for Deutsche Bank in Singapore until 2010 as a director in global markets technology and global head of general-ledger and financial-reporting systems.
