In a discussion with Zhou Wenkai, vice president of Bank of Nanjing, during SIBOS, he outlined the bank's strategic focus on expanding its international and transaction banking services by leveraging its local insights and client base in the Yangtze River Delta. The bank has total assets amounting to RMB 2.28 trillion ($320 billion), ranking fifth among all city commercial banks in China. China's evolving international trade relationships present key opportunities for transaction banking, to which the bank has made a strong commitment to support local SMEs.

Bank of Nanjing now handles an annual transaction volume of approximately $80-100 billion. To meet the evolving needs of its clients, the bank aims to help Chinese companies expand their operations overseas, offering specialised services across various industries, including export, manufacturing, and cross-border e-commerce. It also provides critical support to Chinese companies entering key markets like Southeast Asia and Africa, enhancing their cross-border capabilities through partnerships with institutions such as BNP Paribas.

Furthermore, Zhou noted that Bank of Nanjing is heavily investing in technology to upgrade its transaction banking offerings. The bank views real-time payments infrastructure and digital platforms as essential components in improving efficiency and security for its corporate clients. Technological initiatives include leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance customer service capabilities and improve decision-making processes. By adopting advanced technologies, Bank of Nanjing aims to provide faster, more reliable, and secure banking services for its local SME customers.

Zhou emphasised that the bank’s differentiation lies in its local insights together with a relationship-based approach, and strategic partnerships built through long-term relationships and an understanding of the local economy and businesses, rather than competing directly with larger institutions on network scale. Bank of Nanjing focuses on understanding the specific needs of local clients and delivering targeted solutions through direct services and partnerships, maintaining a competitive edge through this approach.
