The following are notes from our Monday morning meeting. RBS is hoping to raise $8b by selling its airplane leasing business, the world’s fifth-largest. The US selected as the inaugural director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Ohio attorney general Richard Cordray, passing over firebrand Elizabeth Warren. The Bank of Israel is set to raise the core capital requirements under Basel III: Bank Hapoalim and Bank Leumi will need 9%-9.5%, while others will need 8%-8.5%, up from 7.5% now. Japan’s Mizuho Corporate Bank is in negotiations for a 20% stake of Vietnam’s state-owned Vietcombank, the country’s second-largest by assets, worth approximately $760 million. China Everbright Bank has secured $2b from 12 cornerstone investors, including UK insurer Prudential and Singapore’s UOB, for its planned $6b Hong Kong IPO. Malaysia’s central bank is working with investors in Asia and the Middle East to establish a new Islamic bank with at least $1b in capital, capable of large scale cross-border transactions. Barclays India will close its SME business amidst intense competition with domestic players such as HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO Ralph Norris, 62, will retire on December 1st, when private banking head (and fellow New Zealander) Ian Narev, 44, will take over.
